This session will:

  • Introduce attendees to role and perspectives of two national organizations focusing on sexual health, SIECCAN, the Sex Information and Education Council of Canada; and Action Canada for Sexual Health and Rights; and on the role of Public Health in addressing sexual and reproductive health
  • Explore a variety of perspectives related to health equity and inclusion with regards to sexual health matters
  • Explore how we can all work together strategically to advance sexual health

  • Present the new World Health Organization consolidated guideline on sexual and reproductive health and rights of women living with HIV
  • Present some Canadian data on sexual and reproductive health of women living with HIV

Workshop 1

Beyond the birds and the bees: supporting late life sexuality

This workshop is designed to create awareness of and increase knowledge about sexuality and sexual expression in the context of aging, chronic illness and disability. The workshop will discuss the importance of health and social care providers recognizing and supporting late life sexual diversity, sexual expression, and intimacy. Drawing on examples from current and past research discussion will be interactive and prompt critical reflection around how to support more positive and affirming care interactions and experiences for older adults who access long-term care services.

Sexual Health Promotion – Public Health Perspectives

This workshop will present public health responses for sexual health promotion in Peel and York regions. Peel Public Health will highlight some challenges specific to sexually transmitted infections in the Region of Peel including rates, risk factors, and health equity links. Peel Public Health will also discuss some approaches to improve sexual health services in the Region of Peel including offering supportive programming and strengthening community partnerships to increase access to sexual health services. York Region Public Health will share the successes of its sexual health program in using community partnerships to access priority populations in the region. Speakers from York Region Public Health will share information on the selection of priority populations, partnership development strategies, strengths and challenges as well as lessons learned from their outreach project.

Sex and Harm Reduction

This workshop will provide an overview of harm reduction practices and approaches, with an emphasis on party drugs (pills and powders), sexual health and interactions with HIV medications.
